As of 2024, Hong Kong (Chinese citizens of Hong Kong) citizens require a valid visa to enter Vietnam and are eligible for the 90 day E-visa (single/multiple entry). The following documents are required:

  • Hong Kong passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the arrival date.

Most Chinese citizens of Hong Kong visitors need a visa in order to enter Vietnam, and this must be obtained through an online e-visa system or at the local consulate of Vietnam in Hong Kong. The following types of visas are available to Hong Kong passports:

  • Tourist visa: A Vietnam tourist visa is valid for 90 days, single entry.
  • Business visa: Those obtaining a business visa can stay in Vietnam for a maximum of 90 days with multiple entries.

Note: Hong Kong residents with British National (Overseas) passports are not eligible for the 15-day free visa stay and must apply for a visa to visit Vietnam.

How to apply for a Vietnamese visa on a Hong Kong passport

There are three common ways to obtain a Vietnam visa:

Visa at the Vietnam consulate in Hong Kong

Hong Kong passport holders can apply for a Vietnam visa at the Consulate of Vietnam in Hong Kong. To apply, you need to:

  • Submit a visa application form, a passport-size photo, and your passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining.
  • Pay the visa fee, which varies depending on the type of visa and duration.
  • Receive your passport with the visa stamp in person or via mail after about 05 working days.

Apply for e-visa online

Vietnam offers an electronic visa option for those visiting the country for either tourism or business purposes. The e-visa allows for a single entry and a stay of up to 90 days. Here are the essential steps to apply:

  • Visit the Vietnam Immigration Department's official website and complete the online application process.
  • Fill out a form, upload a digital copy of your passport
  • Submit the e-visa processing fee online (25 USD ~ 196 HKD).
  • Receive the visa via email.

Apply for a visa on arrival

If traveling by air, Hong Kong citizens can apply for a Vietnam visa on arrival. To obtain this type of visa:

  • You must reach out to a visa agency or travel company located in Vietnam to obtain a visa approval letter online, which will be issued by the Vietnam Immigration Department.
  • Once you have received the letter, you will need to print it out and bring it, along with a passport-size photo and your passport, to one of Vietnam's international airports upon arrival.

I am a Hong Kong citizen which have BNO passport. Can I apply e-visa using BNO? I cannot find "British National Oversea" in Nationality field.

@Kay Wo, Unfortunately, BNO passport is not presently listed on the eligilble passport for e-visa application. You can consider applying for an approval letter for visa on arrival instead. However, that will require you to travel on an organized tour with a local travel agency/tour operator.
